Philips looks to digital set-top boxes and MHP at IBC
Philips is highlighting the growing role of the set-top box as a gateways to digital content in the home.
Along with the launch of the Multimedia Home Platform (MHP), in its broad presence at this year's IBC, Philips will be demonstrating both new and forthcoming set-top box applications, underlining the key role such devices will be playing in the digitally convergent home of tomorrow.
Visitors to IBC will see Philips' current set-top box line-up, including products for terrestrial, satellite and cable markets across the globe by customers such as DirecTV in the United States, Canal+ Technologies in Europe and MEASAT in Malaysia.
Amongst the new products will be two new receivers being launched in the US satellite market and built around a new Philips set-top box platform, a solution developed to ensure greater application flexibility, higher manufacturing efficiency, and optimised costs for operators.
As a pioneer in the development and implementation of MHP, Philips is showing its new MHP-based satellite receiver, due to be launched later this year in the German market for reception of free-to-air programming.
IBC visitors will be able to see a comprehensive range of MHP solutions Philips has available to consumers, network operators and service providers, and consumer device manufacturers. These include Platform-i, a powerful new suite of end-to-end software solutions, including a step-by-step implementation and evaluation program for MHP-based interactive TV services.
The launch of Platform-i will be supported by a number of advanced enhanced TV applications, including a TV voting system for the Eurovision Song Contest telecast, and a live chat application in use by a Belgian youth TV service.
Other MHP demonstrations on the Philips' IBC stand (1.411) will include a system-on-silicon module solution for MHP-enabled analogue TV sets and set-top boxes, and also an MHP-dedicated application of the Philips' conditional access solution.
