Technology Expert Predicts Predominance Of IPTV

Broadcasting will be delivered to most of the televisions in the developed world through a broadband connection within ten years, digital technology expert Simon Gibson has predicted.
Mr Gibson, a specialist in seeding and growing next-generation networking and telecommunications businesses, made the announcement about Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) last week while launching the University of Wales, Newport's groundbreaking Institute for Advanced Broadcasting (IAB).
At the Creative Capital event in Canary Wharf, Mr Gibson, said: "Trust me. Within ten years IPTV will be the pervasive way of delivering broadcasting. Its rise will be similar to the advent of the internet. For the first two years take up was slow, but with ten years it became a social structure."
Mr Gibson, the Chief Executive of Wesley Clover Corporation, will be an advisor to the new IAB. The centre has been set up by the University of Wales, Newport, and will work alongside broadcasters, content developers, film makers and key industry players to develop research projects that will address the challenges of convergence in digital technology and media and explore suitable distribution and business models for the future.
He added: "The broadcast industry is currently undergoing a major upheaval and the IAB will address these changes.
"We're going to look at how broadcasting is delivered to the customer when they have five thousand channels. We'll look at what drives inclusion and research media literacy. I hope we become a reference point for content makers, broadcasters and regulators."
The IAB was launched at Creative Capital, a three day event organised by the University of Wales, Newport, to encourage businesses to use fresh thinking and creativity to break out of the current economic climate.
Targeted at business leaders in the challenging and changing worlds of media, business, design, regeneration and technology, it featured a programme of interactive workshops, launches, work from the latest fashion and photography talent and sessions with senior industry figures, all shown on state of the art digital walls.
