Oysters on the menu for Cheerful Scout

Cheerful Scout have just created the DVD menus for 'Tipping the Velvet', the much-talked-about provocative new BBC drama, which starts October 9.
Set in England in the 1890s, this colourful, passionate lesbian love story is about the various adventures experienced by a young woman called Nan as she comes to realise that she’s attracted to women and not men.
Scheduled for release on October 28, immediately after the series has been broadcast, The Tipping the Velvet DVD features the three episodes from the series as well as a stills gallery and interviews with author Sarah Waters and screenwriter Andrew Davies. To compliment the rich, sumptuous look of the drama, Cheerful Scout’s Guy Davis has designed DVD menus that conjure up a sense of passion, dreaminess and nostalgia.
His design for the main DVD menu is influenced by the pearly, reflective quality of an oyster shell, a significant theme within the story. Against this dreamy, watery visual effect, significant clips from the series are presented. These clips are portrayed in a flashback sort of way, as though they are Nan’s memories of her life.
The DVD sub-menus also compliment themes from the drama. Since a large segment of the story is set in the world of the Victorian music hall, the episode menus are presented on music hall pamphlets superimposed onto a theatre auditorium background. Each episode menu looks like an old-fashioned programme but acts as a summary of each episode. In addition, the Extras menu features the silhouette of a juggler taken from the drama itself.
