Commercial holographic storage moves closer to reality
US-based InPhase Technologies, a Lucent Technologies venture and dedicated holographic data storage researcher, have announced that they are to use a $600,000 grant received from the National Technology Alliance (NTA) to develop an automated holographic media manufacturing system.
The grant is to assist InPhase in the commercialisation of their patented 'Tapestry' media, which is set to be the first holographic storage media to reach the market.
This latest award marks the fourth grant that InPhase have received from the NTA since 1994, bringing the total awarded to $3.5 million.
Although long considered the domain of science fiction, holographic storage promises to greatly expand the amount of data that can be archived – as much as 200Gb per disk. Providing removable, random access, high density and high performance storage with a 30-year archival life, InPhase believe this is the storage medium of the future.
The National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA) manages the NTA program as the Executive Agent for the US Department of Defense and the Intelligence Community.
