Megahertz Reappoint Bill O'Flynn To Head Woodworking Division

Cambridgeshire broadcast systems integrator Megahertz have taken on craftsman Bill O'Flynn to head the company's expanding woodworking division.
O'Flynn worked at Megahertz until seven years ago, but left to gain more experience, and eventually founded his own company until Megahertz tempted him back recently with the offer of running their fully-equipped woodwork studio and expanding this all-important side of the business.
"Our woodwork division is sometimes overlooked by our clients, but it's absolutely essential," commented Managing Director Frances Jarvis. "Studio furniture almost always has to be custom-designed to suit our clients' wishes, and it would be completely impractical for us to contract out that level of work, so it has to be a service we offer our clients in-house. So often, we need to make alterations to a piece of furniture in an existing design to accommodate a change in our client's requirements, or even create something new from scratch. Here, it's a simple matter of taking the plans or ideas down to the woodwork office and having the guys deal with it there and then; no freelancers could ever be so responsive."
O'Flynn trained as a building craftsman and plasterer, and later designed and built reproduction antique furniture before first joining Megahertz in the late 1990s.
He relishes the challenge ahead of him. "Things have changed a lot since I was first employed here. Woodworking tools are much better than they used to be - you can create more complex designs quickly and more easily yourself, without having to have them custom-manufactured. There are also a lot more interesting, lighter composite materials you can use in studio furniture now - when I first worked here, everything was made from solid wood, which was nice but very heavy, and very expensive! Megahertz design and build a lot more studios for outside broadcast vehicles now than they used to, and you really have to keep the weight down in those designs where you can.
"As well as continuing to supply our broadcast business with the quality design that we're known for, I'm looking forward to making our skills available in new markets. I have contacts in and experience of the business of making furniture for the security market - desks for CCTV monitor stations and gatehouses, for example, which rarely fit standard designs - and we're talking to several businesses about designing eye-catching custom reception desks for them. I'll be representing Megahertz at several new trade shows over the coming year in a concerted effort to build up that side of the business."
