Rohde & Schwarz Lead The Path In Reducing Carbon Footprint
The switch from analogue to digital transmission is an opportunity for broadcasters to drastically cut their operating costs by adopting the latest, power efficient transmitter technologies.
Rohde & Schwarz is at the forefront of a move to supply high performance, reliable, and yet energy efficient broadcast transmitter solutions. Its latest transmitters boast a power consumption that is 20 to 30% below those now in the field, meaning that energy savings amount to thousands of euros annually for each new transmitter installed.
The new R & S NV8600 UHF transmitter family, just unveiled at NAB this year, is the most efficient liquid cooled transmitter family yet. This multi standard platform caters for analogue TV with powers of 2.5 kW to 40 kW, for DVB-T and DVB-H with powers of 1.3 kW to 11.8 kW, plus ATSC at 1.8 kW to 16.5 kW.
The R & S NV8600's power efficiency is attributable to numerous technical achievements by Rohde & Schwarz' expert RF team - notable among these are a new transistor design and optimized algorithms that ensure improved matching and stable transmission. Building upon the R & S NV7000 family, the R & S NV8600 range integrates more powerful amplifier modules - a 6 kW DVB signal can now be generated from a single 19" transmitter rack, providing footprint and cost savings.
Thomas Loichinger, Head of Product Management Terrestrial Transmitter Systems for Rohde & Schwarz, commented: "Buying decisions for transmitters have largely centred on performance and cost, but energy efficiency is beginning to be recognised as an important consideration."
Rohde & Schwarz is able to demonstrate efficiencies of more than 20% higher than any other solid state transmitter in this power class available on the market today. At present energy costs, this amounts to savings in the region of 5,000 euros per transmitter per year, and in a national network with an operational lifetime of 25 years, this is a substantial benefit, saving millions of euros.
