The Look Chooses Quantel eQFX

The Look, the new boutique HD/DI facility in London, has chosen a Quantel eQFX system to sit at the heart of its workflow.
Founder Thomas Urbye selected the eQ to enable him “to build a business on just one machine. With the eQ I can work on the whole project – conform, tweak the cut, online, grade, do visual effects, even title it, then finally play it all out; it’s unique.”
Urbye knows a thing or two about HD and DI, having been an iQ colourist and operator at The Moving Picture Company for four years prior to setting up The Look. His credit list is impressive, having worked on over 20 major movies including ‘Corpse Bride’, ‘Stormbreaker’ and ‘Troy’, as well as dozens of promos and some notable independent productions such as ‘Benjamin’s Struggle’, ‘Losing the Plot’ and award winning WalkerGeorge documentary ‘Young@Heart’.
Urbye is keen to bring the benefits of his experience to every stage of production: “As well as looking after post production, I also like to build a relationship with the DoPs, Directors and Editors, to enable us to get an even better result, as well as save time and cost by consultation at every stage of the project, from camera selection and testing to principal photography through to editing. Getting the director into our facility at an early stage of the project really opens up the possibilities and value to the production.”
The Look’s eQFX is configured with six hours of HD-RGB storage to allow a number of projects to be worked on simultaneously. “eQ’s ability to handle it all within a single system cuts out the need to send work out to other systems, if there are a number of complex roto shots they can be offloaded in the background to our visual effects artists, who will chose the right software tool for the job, it all helps to keep the session active,” says Urbye. “It means we can be more efficient and deliver the client results faster too.”
“As well as film, we will also be working with the new HD formats such as Viper, Genesis, Arri D20, Varicam and the new Sony F23,” Urbye adds. “It’s critical to me to be partnering with great manufacturers who trust that I know how to help clients get the very best results from the equipment. We are looking to start weekend workshops where various cameras are connected directly to the grading suite. In post, Quantel delivers the speed and quality clients expect, and having worked on Quantel systems daily for the last four years, I know how to get the best out of the box.”
