New Documentary On Propeller TV Tackles Gun Crime
Propeller TV (Sky 195) is to screen a powerful documentary and music video created by young people affected by violence, to help tackle the causes of gun and knife crime.
Propleller, who claim to be the UK's first national digital channel will screen 'Disarm' at 9pm on October 10, 18, 26, November 3 and 6.
The documentary is based around a music video 'Feeling I Can Be Someone' written by Sheffield-based youth worker Tony Brown, working with young people from Parson Cross, an area of the city which suffered a spate of gun-related crimes earlier this year. The documentary includes a choreographed performance to Brown's song in a video directed by Odd Theatre Company, cut with interviews with the young people, Sheffield residents and Pat Regan, campaigner of Mothers Against Guns.
Propeller TV is the first satellite television channel in Europe to screen 100 percent new and original programming and is dedicated to showcasing raw, edgy and challenging television. Dawn Simpson Project Development Director, who worked closely with the documentary team on compliance and guidelines, commented: "I was impressed with the creative approach used to tackle such an emotive subject and the quality of the finished piece. By screening Disarm, Propeller is able to help raise the volume of these young people in expressing their hopes and aspirations for the future and to contribute to the wider debate about guns and violence."
Tony Brown commented: "Disarm' relates to disarming not just from guns but from
attitudes that stop people from reaching their full potential. In the past, media attention on Parson Cross has often been negative but this film has a positive and simple message of hope. For Disarm to be broadcast nationally on Propeller is a huge boost to the self esteem not only of the young people who were involved in making it but also to the parents and the wider community."
