Doremi Technologies Premiers European 4K Cinema
Doremi Cinema has provided the digital mastering and playback technology for the first movie to be mastered in 4K in Europe.
On September 20, the movie ‘Paris, je t'aime’ is being screened at ETC's (Entertainment Technology Center) Digital Cinema Lab at the Hollywood Pacific Theatre - built to debut breakthroughs in digital cinema technology. Making another technology statement, the replay is being beamed from Paris to Hollywood using SmartJog’s secure and high performance media delivery network.
Doremi Cinema’s part in this Digital Cinema landmark has involved supplying Éclair Laboratories, Paris, with equipment to generate the digital cinema master (DCDM) from the edited 4K master, as well as providing the cinema replay server.
This year Éclair Laboratories took delivery of a Doremi DMS-2000-4K, the 4K-capable version of Doremi’s Digital Cinema mastering system using DCI JPEG 2000 compression encoding.
‘Paris, je t’aime’ is an example of Éclair lab’s knowledge and know-how in Digital Cinema. The film was scanned-in at 6K and mastered in a 4K DI operation at Éclair. Encoding the images for the DCM took no more than 24 hours per reel including monitoring acceptance, completing the film in a week. The realisation of a complete 4K production and delivery path opens the way towards the Digital Age for European feature films that Éclair Laboratories has promoted for years.
Smartjog’s secure satellite and terrestrial network will transmit the 4K DCP directly to the theatre. There, the 2K images will be extracted from the 4K file and English subtitles overlaid onto the final projected footage in accordance with DCI specifications. A 2K Christie DLP projector and a Doremi DCP-2000 sever will be used to show the film.
This screening from ISA, a consortium of eight French digital cinema companies, will showcase how French professionals can provide digital motion picture content according to DCI specifications and SMPTE standards.
