MTV RETURN TO JAPAN

MTV Networks, the leading music television group, are to make a multi-million dollar investment in Japan to launch a 24-hour cable channel.
The MTV channel will be a joint venture with H&Q Asia Pacific, through the venture capital group’s @JapanMedia arm.
Broadcasting will start in January 2001 on private satellite channels, with particular emphasis on Japanese artists. Revenue will come mainly from advertisements from multinational companies such as Coca-Cola and Levi’s and numerous cable subscriptions.
MTV said that it also expects to export Japanese content overseas, especially to other countries in Asia such as Taiwan.
MTV has 15 local-language websites, including sites in Korea, China and Brazil.
