BBC CHOOSE SCREEN SUBTITLING SYSTEMS

BBC Resources have awarded their supply contract for a new generation of Digital Audio Description equipment to Screen Subtitling Systems, UK.
Screen Subtitling Systems were chosen by BBC Resources to design and supply encoders for the Audio description component, which will accompany a proportion of the BBC Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) services.
The Audio Description (AD) service is aimed to provide audible description of visual events on screen for the visually impaired viewer, during silent intervals between commentary and dialogue.
This newly created technology was the result of the ITC’s decision instructing that from the start of the second year of DTT, two per cent of all programmes must carry audio description.
Almost 50 ADE units have been installed for the BBC digital services and although the users set top boxes (STB’s) are not yet available commercially, BBC 2 viewers can already adjust their STB’s to hear audio description only.
