MEDIA-BASED MILLENIUM AWARDS FROM BBC AND ITN

A MILLENIUM Awards Scheme set up to enable individuals from black and ethnic minorities to implement media-based projects in their local communities has been praised by Culture Secretary Chris Smith.
Smith congratulated a number of the award winners at a special event earlier this month.
The Scheme was created in conjunction with the BBC and ITN and funded through a Millennium Commission grant. The award winners ranged from age 18 to early 40’s and their projects reflected a wide range of individual interests.
Following the successful completion of a special training programme, designed and delivered by BBC Training and Development, each of the participants worked on attachment within the BBC. ITN provided technical support throughout via a helpline.
Speaking at the presentation Smith said: “The involvement of BBC and ITN has enabled Award Winners to access world-class training and technical advice, introduced them to role models from a variety of media backgrounds and exposed them to new networks of opportunity. We hope the success of this Scheme will encourage others to come forward and take up an award.”
