RNID welcome subtitling funding from Film Council

The Royal National Institute for the Deaf (RNID) have welcomed the Film Council's announcement that they are to invest up to £500,000 in film subtitling.
The announcement comes after a two-year campaign by RNID. The organisation have been calling on the Film Council to lead cinemas and film distributors to improve access for the five million deaf and hard of hearing people in Britain who regularly use subtitles.
Brian Lamb, RNID's Director of Communications, said: "Since the advent of 'talkies', cinema has been totally inaccessible to deaf people.
"This investment is fantastic news. At long last the access needs of deaf and hard of hearing people are being recognised by the Film Council. However, this investment should only be seen as the start in transforming access to films.
"Soon every cinema should be showing subtitled films on a regular basis.
"We want every cinema to have facilities for subtitling by 2005."
