The Comedy Unit and MnE join forces on 'Comadaidh Oir'

Award-winning Glasgow based indies The Comedy Unit and MnE Television have joined forces on new series ‘Comadaidh Óir’ (Comedy Gold), which follows six aspiring Gaelic writers as they vie to be crowned Comedy King or Queen.
The contenders are – Duncan MacDonald, Artair Donald, Iain MacDonald, Mairi MacLeod, Gilleasbuig Ferguson and Scott MacDonald.
Part talent contest, part reality TV, the troop tour six key Gaelic speaking destinations (Edinburgh, Glasgow, Skye, Berneray, Benbecula and Barra) in the ‘Comadaidh Óir’ bus, putting on shows performed by four actors – Alec MacDonald, Carina MacLeod, Kenny MacRae and Ruairidh MacIver.
Writers have just three days to prepare their comedy sketches, drawing on inspiration from the location. Entertainment expert Cathy MacDonald is there to offer advice, and as The Boss, she makes the brutal decision each week as to which one writer fails to make the grade. The chosen writer then sits out the show in the seat of shame – a golden toilet seat…
To add to the drama, also on hand will be a local comedy buff giving no holds barred praise or criticism. Compere Morag MacDonald, presides over events and makes sure that neither Cathy, the local comedy buff or the writer not taking part, go too far with their opinions. But ultimately, it is the audience who has the power, as they vote on the winning sketch each week.
The series kicks off in Edinburgh, home of the world’s biggest comedy festival. So, no pressure there! The writers feature topics including the Festival, Live8, Scotland’s smoking ban, and the Gaelic language.
In weeks to come, viewers will be taken on a rollercoaster ride of one person’s quest for comedy writing success. It will be pure Comedy Gold!
