Grant for disability project awarded to bfi Education
The British Film Institute (bfi) Education department have been awarded a grant of £50,000 to create a video compilation and teaching guide, designed to help raise awareness of disability through film in schools across the UK.
Following the announcement the Minister for Disabled People, Maria Eagle, visited an education workshop at the National Film Theatre and met with members of the Disability on Film team, including project leader Wendy Earle and Dr Paul Darke of Outside Centre, who will be working on the project along with Disability Equality in Education.
Access to culturally diverse work through the medium of film education is a core objective of the bfi. The grant will help create a video and teaching pack for teachers across the UK and raise awareness of the issues faced by people with disabilities.
This is one of four UK-wide projects receiving major grants, part of a Government-sponsored programme of innovative projects dealing with disability planned to run throughout 2003, European Year of Disabled People.
The grant was awarded by the Department of Work and Pensions.
