BSKYB EXTEND DIGITAL TV OFFERING

BRITISH Sky Broadcasting (Sky), have extended their array of television based e-commerce and online applications with the launch of digital text featuring on-screen interactive betting.
Following some initial technical problems, the enhanced Sky text service is now available subscription free in more than four million digital satellite homes and requires no additional equipment. Initially accessible on Sky digital channels, Sky Text delivers more than 1,200 pages of news, sport, entertainment and information at the touch of a button. The service, features full-colour visuals and simple navigation with the television handset.
The interactive capabilities of the digital satellite set-top box allow viewers to go online within Sky Text to bet on sporting events or to drill down for in-depth news, sport and information from Sky.com. These services are fully integrated within the broadcast environment, enabling viewers to continue to watch television while they are placing a bet or reading a news report.
Jon Florshiem, BSkyB’s Group Director of Sales and Distribution, said: “By integrating online services within the broadcast environment, the launch of Sky Text and TV betting brings a new dimension to Sky Digital’s interactive offering. With this initiative, BSkyB is delivering on its pledge to develop a multi-service platform that captures more value from continuing rapid growth in the Sky digital subscriber base.”
The TV betting facility is provided by Surrey Sports, part of the Sports Internet Group, which was acquired by BSkyB earlier this year.
Access to the online services is provided through the integrated modem in the set-top box and browser software, based on WML-based online services including email, will be added to the Sky Text environment in the coming months.
