S4C GIVE SEAL OF APPROVAL TO WHITE PAPER
Welsh independent broadcaster, S4C, have welcomed the publication of the Government’s Communications White Paper.
Huw Jones, S4C’s Chief Executive, said: “The White Paper gives a seal of approval to the way that S4C have grown and developed over the years. The Government’s plans in many ways build on the success of the S4C model of self-regulation, placing it in a broader context. In a fast changing communications environment, the Government have recognised the importance of a full service in the Welsh language and have recognised S4C’s unique role and contribution.”
Commenting on the proposals to establish a new regulator, Elan Closs Stephens, Chair of S4C Authority, said: “The S4C Authority are Wales’ only independent regulators. Their role and independence have been crucial in the development and success of S4C over the last 18 years. Because they are close to the population served by the channel, they are able to combine effective regulation of the channel’s out and activities with a firm and imaginative vision for broadcasting in Wales. The proposed Ofcom structure recognises the success of this model of self-regulation and I hope that we will be able to build upon it.”
