AMPEX DATA SYSTEMS INSTALL 50 DST SYSTEMS

AMPEX Data Systems have installed in excess of 50 broadcast near-line archive systems, claiming the lead with their DST based library systems.
With recent installations at Viacom and WPTV Ampex have now supplied more near-line digital archives to broadcasters and content holders than any other supplier.
Paul Shonfeld, Ampex’s EMEA Manager, said: “With content hours measured in thousands of hours the digital storage requirement is measured in tens if not hundreds of TBs. Ampex provides the highest capacity media in the market and unequalled search speeds; combine this with the gentlest tape handling you can get and Guaranteed Data Interchange and we can provide real multiple access near-line archiving and not just a back-up system”.
Because Ampex’s media capacity is so high, less tapes are required to archive content. This means that not only is the cost of the archive measured at less then 1p per MB it also reduces the bin count and reduces the cost of archival software as the majority of applications are priced by the bin.
Shonfeld continued: “Many of our customers are surprised that the overall cost of an Ampex solution is much lower then they believed, especially when compared to our competitors. We believe that 2001 will be a big year for Ampex Data Systems and have the right partnerships in place to provide solutions from a few hours to hundreds of thousands of hours.”
