VTR posts The Bravery’s ‘Unconditional’ promo

Full-service facility, VTR, has completed post-production on The Bravery’s Unconditional.
Directed by Flynn Productions’ Paul Gore, the promo is an eerie performance piece, shot in a field in North London. As the song builds up, it transpires that the band are no longer alone as visitors – including a murder of crows and a herd of horses - approach the scene. As this scenario would have been virtually impossible to shoot, Flynn called upon VTR to create the illusion.
The whole process took around three weeks in total, with Flame artist Dan Williams attending the two-day shoot. The graphics team at the hive spent a week matting out all the elements needed to composite the shots, before VTR’s Flame team, led by James Allen, began the effects work.
“This was a complex but enjoyable promo to work on,” said Allen. “Only a few of the crows and horses that you see are real, the majority are images which we’d sourced, digitally manipulated and placed in situ. It was vital that we attended the shoot so we could advise on object positioning, particularly for the horse scenes. We then spent time layering images to achieve a realistic finish to the promo.”
Paul Gore looked to VTR to encourage the strange ambience about the promo, which Tom Russell was able to achieve during the grading process. He toned down the yellow colour that the horses had been painted, making them look less cheerful. In the final grade he added a rose hue, which added to the unreal nature of the piece.
“We work with VTR because we know we’ll get a dedicated service from the very bottom to the top,” said Charlotte Woodhead, producer, Flynn Productions. “The Flame boys at VTR and team at the hive are fantastic and always do a great job on our promos. This job was no exception.”
