HUMAN RIGHTS FESTIVAL UNVEIL PROGRAMME
THE full programme for this year’s Human Rights Watch International Film Festival at the Ritzy cinema in London has been unveiled.
The fifth festival, from March 29 to April 5, will show a total of 22 films, including both documentary and drama features which highlight human rights issues from around the world.
Screening highlights include the opening night film and UK premier of Spike Lees’ ‘Bamboozeled’; Ken Loachs’ ‘Bread and Roses’; Edet Belzberg’s ‘Children Underground’, which was awarded the Jury Prize for ‘Best Documentary’ at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, and Julian Schnabel’s ‘Before Night Falls’, which has earned Javier Bardem a ‘Best Actor’ nomination at this year’s academy Awards and has been selected as the Benefit Gala Screening at the Curzon Mayfair on March 29.
The festival’s closing film is the world premier of Ken Fero and Tariq Mehmood’s ‘Injustice.’ The documentary follows the families of those who have died at the hands of the police since David Oluwale became the first black person to die in British police custody in 1969. The filmmakers and other participants of the documentary will be present at the screening.
An exhibition of drawings, called ‘The War Through My Eyes’, by Chechen children living in the refugee camps in Ingushetia, runs along side the festival screenings at the Ritzy Café. (CD)
