GMTV OPTS FOR CLIPBOX SOLUTION FROM QUANTEL

THE UK’s premier national commercial breakfast broadcasters, GMTV, are revamping their station’s output with the installation of an integrated server-based system from Quantel.
GMTV will be up and running with the new system later this year when London Studios, where they are based, will also have digitised all their studios.
The Quantel/IBIS/Flash solution was the system of choice for Chief Engineer Geoff Wright, after exhaustive evaluation of the options available. He said: “I have been wanting to combine the newsroom systems and video editing for some time now. The decision by London Studios to digitise the studio area meant I had to bring the production side in line. I am a great believer in Quantel products and when I saw what they had done at ITN and on a smaller scale at Abingdon I knew theirs was the best and most reliable solution around - perhaps even the only solution.”
The installation consists of a 14-port Clipbox Power, Clipbox Studio and two edit seats, with automation provided by IBIS and Flash. The 14-port Clipbox will provide instant, direct access to 100 hours of DVCPRO 25 on-line storage for all facilities from lines-in to transmission. Craft editing will be carried out on the two edit seats operating directly with the Clipbox store.
The Clipbox Studio will provide extra storage and transmission backup facility. Clipbox Power and Clipbox Studio with their shared unique agility and flexibility will ensure that GMTV will be as up to the minute as possible with late-breaking news, a prime consideration in the never-ending ratings war.
As in the successful Carlton News installation at Abingdon, automation will be supplied by IBIS SprinTx, providing media management for ingest to Clipbox from VTRs and lines-in as well as a video server library database manager.
IBIS will also provide the desktop journalist with editing via SprinTx ClipTrim. Flash Intercart will supply the familiar Betacart-like gallery control of the Clipbox ports. (CD)
