NOTHING REAL’S TREMOR SHAKES BBC SCIENCE

BBC Science has purchased the UK’s first Tremor compositing system from UK sole reseller Tyrell.
The Nothing Real Tremor system is to be a key component in BBC Science’s production pipeline helping to advance both the speed and quality of its throughput. The product, which is well into the beta test program, will be fully launched at NAB 2001 in Las Vegas. BBC Science is the largest production base for science programming in the world. It is now part of a larger department called BBC Specialist Factual, which produces numerous science, arts, history and nature programs. Many of the cutting edge graphics, central to series such as ‘The Human Body,’ ‘Superhuman,’ ‘The Planets,’ and ‘Ancient Apocalypse’ scheduled to air later this year, are created by the BBC Science CGI unit.
Angela Barson, BBC Science freelance digital compositor, said: “When we needed to expand our 2D department we wanted to invest in a system which was at the forefront of compositing technology. We were already using Shake extensively, so being able to have all the functionality of Shake along with the real-time capabilities of Tremor made it an obvious choice.
“Having one Tremor system and several Shake floating licenses will allow compositors using other software packages to collaborate more effectively by switching to Shake whenever the shot requires it. Distributed rendering on our render farm will also ensure that the real-time systems are not affected by local background rendering. In addition, the availability of Tinder plug-ins will also bring added functionality to Tremor as well as provide a degree of familiarity and consistency across all our platforms.”
Introduced at IBC 2000, Tremor is modelled as a front room, client-based solution, engineered to handle HDTV, commercial video and broadcast production projects. Built around a new, simplified and streamlined interface the stytem incorporates proven technology based on the powerful rendering engine of Nothing Real’s flagship product Shake. Tremor will be sold as an integrated compositing hardware/software solution.
Simon Brett, Managing Director, Tyrell said: "Due to it's speed, flexibility and overall quality, Shake has proven extremely successful and the compositing tool of choice for some of the largest film houses in London. With its real time video capture feature, Tremor will take this one stage further and as sole UK reseller we are looking forward to being the provider of this front room tool, which is promising to have an extremely successful future."
Tyrell will support the product from its London, Manchester, Bristol and Dublin offices.
