S4C TOP THE CELTIC LEAGUE WITH THREE CFTF AWARDS

S4C proved that they're top of the ‘Celtic League’ by winning three prestigious awards at the 2001 Celtic Film and Television Festival (CFTF) held in Truro, Cornwall.
The Welsh TV channel lifted the highly prized ‘Spirit of the Festival Award’ as the Oscar-nominated film ‘Solomon and Gaenor’ wooed the panel judges. S4C also came away with the ‘Best Drama Series’ for the hard-hitting drama ‘Pen Tennyn’ and won the ‘Best Youth Programme’ award for the travel series ‘Bicini’ at the 22nd CFTF.
These successes capped a weekend of launches, screenings, forums and discussions for the film and television industry in Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Brittany, Cornwall and the Isle of Man.
S4C were particularly prominent in this year's festival as S4C Chief Executive, Huw Jones was also elected the new Chair of the Festival.
Jones said: "The quality of debate during seminars and the number of key industry figures who have come to Truro to show that there is an increasingly wide recognition of the importance of our perennial themes of identity, culture and language, and the challenge of giving them expression in the modern media. The issues of diversity and cultural distinctiveness which run through this Festival are now at the very centre of the European discourse.
“In a year in which a film in a foreign language has won a number of major Hollywood prizes, we should feel confident in the value and universality of our own stories and in the increasing willingness of the world at large to listen to them." (CD)
