BROADCASTING MINISTER LISTENS TO RELIGIOUS GROUPS
Views on religious broadcasting and programming are being discussed at a special meeting of faith group representatives called by Broadcasting Minister Janet Anderson.
The Minister wanted to hear at first hand the views of the UK's different faith groups towards religious broadcasting issues as set out in the Government's White Paper A New Future for Communications, published in December last year. This meeting forms a part of that consultation process.
Anderson said: "We are well aware of the level of interest in religious broadcasting. That is why we want to hear at first hand how faith groups think it should fit into the new framework for broadcasting regulation as set out in Communications White Paper.
"In our White Paper, we felt it was right to also invite views on whether the restrictions on ownership of national broadcasting licences by religious bodies should now be relaxed due to the greater opportunities the digital age will offer.
"I have already met and discussed this issue with religious broadcasters to hear their views first hand. Now I want to meet representatives of various faith groups so that I can hear their views at first hand too.
"This will be an important meeting. As well as offering food for thought on the current standard of religious programming, the views expressed around the table will inform the Government's thinking on how any future legislation on religious ownership of broadcasting licences might be most appropriately and sensitively framed."
The two-hour meeting will be attended by representatives of the major faiths in the UK including members of the Central Religious Advisory Committee (CRAC).
CRAC is a standing committee of religious figures drawn from the Buddhist, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim and Sikh traditions as well as the major Christian denominations.
It advises the BBC, the ITC and the Radio Authority on religious programming and licensing issues. Representatives of other religious groups not represented on CRAC which have made responses to the White Paper are also invited. Discussions will include a general debate on the current scope and quality of religious programming and the issues raised in the White Paper. (CD)
