NEWS CONSORTIUM GAIN ITC NOMINATED STATUS

THE ITC have granted nominated news provider status to the ‘Channel Three News’ consortium.
This means that the consortium, consisting of Bloomberg, BSkyB, CBS News, Chrysalis Group and Ulster Television, have been judged by the Commission to be ‘effectively equipped’ and ‘adequately financed’ to provide a high quality national and international news service to ITV.
This is the first time that a company other than ITN has applied to the ITC for nominated news provider status, opening up the provision of news on ITV to competition. However, it now remains for ITV to decide who will win their news contract.
The ITC considered the application from Channel Three News against the requirements laid down in the Broadcasting Act to ensure that a nominated news provider is, or if appointed would be, effectively equipped and adequately financed. As part of that process, and as the statute requires, the ITC consulted all the regional Channel 3 licensees. (CD)
