Channel 4 chooses JVC for future-proof DVD distribution

Channel 4 has invested in 18 JVC BD-X200E DVD recorders for use in the Channel 4 press office and postproduction.
Designed to meet the current and future requirements of professional DVD creators and content distributors, the BD-X200E DVD recorder is ideal for creating DVD’s and instantaneous recordings.
Robert Luggar, Technology Projects Manager, Channel 4 commented: "Up until now, we have made press copies of our programmes on VHS. We see this format as outdated. Recording on to DVD is now affordable, faster, offers flexibility and produces a much better image quality than VHS."
Sixteen of the DVD recorders will be used to record programmes for compilation and mastering prior to distribution to journalists and media. “The demand for sending information to the media is always high in terms of time and quality. In some cases, the programme content is not decided until late in the day. To meet this demand, we needed a workhorse recorder to be able to provide the raw master material to our Press Office. JVC provided the ideal DVD solution,” stated Luggar.
The Channel 4 post production facilities have also invested in two DVD recorders. The titling and chaptering features of the recorder are used to convert programmes to DVD easily and efficiently. Video images are converted directly to DVD, enabling the quick search of DVD chapters using thumbnails.
The recorder also has the ability to perform authoring, encoding and DVD burning in real time. Utilising a TCP/IP network interface, the BD-200E can duplicate DVDs up to four times faster through the Ethernet with as many as five DVD recorders connected at any one time.
Luggar added: "The service and help from JVC has been excellent."
The 18 BD-X200E DVD recorders units were installed in October, 2004.
