Bafta winner becomes film fellow at Brookes
Award-winning filmmaker Pawel Pawlikowski is to become a Creative Arts Fellow at Oxford Brookes University, following a major grant from the Arts and Humanities Research Board.
Pawlikowski will spend three years at the University, undertaking research into the realist genres of contemporary film-making in Britain, and interacting with staff and students on the University’s new degree in Film Studies.
Pawlikowski will be officially welcomed to the University after the first screening, outside the Edinburgh Festival, of his latest film, ‘My Summer of Love’, which will take place at The Phoenix Picture House in Oxford on Wednesday October 6. My Summer of Love had its first screening at the Edinburgh Festival 2004, where it won the Michael Powell Award for the Best New British Feature Film.
Born in Warsaw but based in Oxford, Pawlikowski is also known for his film, ‘Last Resort’ (2001), which was the winner of eight awards, including a Bafta for the most promising new directing talent in British cinema. His poetic documentaries, including ‘From Moscow to Pietushki’ (1990), ‘Dostoevsky’s Travels’ (1991), ‘Serbian Epics’ (1992), ‘Tripping with Zhirinovsky’ (1995), and the short fiction ‘Twockers’ (1998) have earned him the highest critical accolades.
Pawlikowski said: “I am delighted to have this opportunity to lead and conduct research into generic and practical boundaries in contemporary British filmmaking. I believe that my own style is recognised as raising a challenge to the industry and the film community. I shall benefit enormously from being able to develop my thinking on this subject by working within the strong academic context of Oxford Brookes University, alongside its team of European film specialists within the Department of Modern Languages.”
