DFI Selects The Leyard Luminate Ultra 1.5

News Image
The Danish Film Institute (DFI) building, Filmhuset, is located in Gothersgade, in the heart of Copenhagen, Denmark.

Its roof-top benefits from picturesque, panoramic views of the city, making it the ideal place for a modern roof terrace. From concept to realisation, the process of transforming this underutilised space into a 1700m2 terrace has been a long journey, but now a Leyard Luminate Ultra Series 1.5 mm LED screen forms the cinematic centrepiece of a complete renovation, featuring a bar, eatery, exhibition space, children's play area and even two outdoor Videotheques, cozy, covered booths for watching movies on large touchscreens. The whole terrace is now a destination that film buffs and the entire community will benefit from for years to come.

DFI chose the Leyard Luminate Ultra 1.5 as its main cinema screen due to its suitability for outdoor use, with an IP66 weatherproof rating, dual power supply, and ultra-wide viewing angle, matching their specifications.

The LED wall measures 6.5 metres wide by 2.5 metres high. As part of a new generation of high-end, fine-pitch outdoor HD solutions, the 4K LED screen features an all-in-one high-strength frame design, a high-precision seamless splicing cabinet, excellent colour uniformity, and ultra-high image quality. It also benefits from a new common-cathode drive, which offers lower power consumption, reduced heat generation, and longer service life.

The cinema seats 127 people and features a retractable roof and removable sides, providing protection from the elements. Christian Dannevang, AVC’s Director of Business Development and project manager for the installation, explains the project's requirements.

"In the summertime, it's a great place to be. There’s a café on the roof where you can buy food and drinks," he explained. "We did the entire installation including the screen, audio, lights, everything. It's designed similarly to an indoor cinema but with loudspeakers built for outdoor use and intelligent sound design to minimise disturbance to the neighbours."

The cinema has built-in controls that automatically adjust to the ambient environment. When the sun shines, the screen's brightness is adjusted to ensure the experience mirrors that of an indoor cinema. Venue staff simply press play, and the sensors handle the rest. This solution has worked well for the venue, keeping disruptions to a minimum.

"Teamwork is especially important on a long-term project such as this, with the teams at DFI, AVC and Leyard working closely to overcome all the challenges of the past few years," Dannevang continued. "Leyard provided support with both on-site and off-site teams, assisting with calibration and installation."

Screen resolution was also a high priority for the institute. Although DCI accreditation was not a key consideration, the solution is colour-compliant, giving audiences the best experience for the schedule of world cinema releases, children’s favourites and Danish classics. Kenneth Just, Manager at DFI, is thrilled with the results, as he concludes.
