LiveU Wins FIDAL Open Call

LiveU has won a FIDAL Open Call to take part in the 'Large Scale Field Trials Beyond 5G' research project.

FIDAL seeks to test innovative solutions with partners in the fields of media and PPDR (Public Protection and Disaster Relief). The FIDAL project is co-funded by the European Union's Horizon Europe research and innovation program and Smart Networks and Services.

As part of the FIDAL/B5VideoNet (B5GVN) project, LiveU will test use cases spanning on- and off-site remote production, cloud-based production, mobile production, and edge-cloud production. It will also test Beyond 5G (B5G) technologies, such as network slicing, edge computing, standalone (SA) private network/SNPN, and network exposure.

The tests include selected elements of the LiveU EcoSystem including the LU800 multi-cam portable encoder, LiveU Mobile Receiver, LiveU Xtend bonding device, LU-Link cloud service, and LiveU Ingest automatic recording solution with cloud-based remote production.

The B5GVN network slicing tests will experiment with the benefits and tradeoffs of guaranteed bandwidth, latency and video performance in simulated crowded areas and other scenarios with challenging network conditions. Uplink and downlink oriented slices can be pre-ordered and made available in an on-site private network or in multiple sites (if an event takes place in several locations).

To test for reduced latency, LiveU will also use edge computing services in the operator’s internal edge cloud instead of the public cloud. B5GVN will test this concept and its potential benefit for the media production industry, including reduced costs by localizing video transfers.
Alongside the above, LiveU remote production use cases will also utilize the 5G-SA private network and network exposure components. The 5G-SA Private Network can be used in LiveU's On-site Production solution where both the uplink and the downlink can remain on the same network in the same location, or in different locations and networks. This on-site remote production workflow supports cost-effective multi-cam production. For this, LiveU will be using its LU800 PROs as well as its Mobile Receiver, Xtend and LU-Link solutions.

"This is an important trial that enables LiveU to gain further experience using the most advanced Beyond-5G and towards 6G technologies," said Baruch Artman, LiveU's AVP, Head of 5G Projects and ESG. "LiveU project's goal is to leverage its core bonding technology for reliable live quality video production on the one hand, and the advanced ‘Beyond 5G‘ services and technologies on the other, for the benefit of innovative and cost-effective use cases. The industry still has a lot to gain when it comes to optimizing 5G for primary contribution, LiveU’s aim for the project is to demonstrate innovative real-world results to share with customers and the industry."

LiveU will work closely with FIDAL partner, University of Patras in Greece, an expert in basic and applied communication research, for the M&E part of the project. LiveU's winning B5GVN proposal includes collaboration with other FIDAL partners such as Nova, one of the largest telcos in Greece, The Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH), Ubitech, a provider of the network exposure capacity and others.
