TI ANNOUNCE DIGITAL RELEASE OF ‘PLANET OF THE APES’

Texas Instruments (TI) have announced that Twentieth Century Fox’s ‘Planet of the Apes’ will be digitally released in one theatre in London on August 17, all equipped with DLP projectors.
This title becomes the 32nd major motion picture to have been released in DLP Cinema technology.
The release of ‘Planet of the Apes’ marks the third digital release from Fox, following previous digital releases ‘Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace’ and ‘Titan AE’.
Notable for this digital release, DLP Cinema technology has been involved throughout the digital cinema process. Not only are projectors using DLP Cinema technology involved in the showing of the movies, but also in the post-production process. The mastering process also includes DLP cinema processes that ensure ultimate quality and compatibility with DLP Cinema projectors, it is managed on behalf of TI by Entertainment Technology Consultants.
Doug Darrow, Business Manager for DLP Cinema, said: “What it means is that the studios are guaranteed that, if the same DLP Cinema projectors and processes are used to create and exhibit movies, and system components which are ‘DLP Cinema Ready’ are used throughout the distribution process, the audience will see the exact same image as the creators saw in post-production.”
The ‘Planet of the Apes’ release is also notable because it marks the debut of a new playback product from Avica called the Avica FilmStore Digital Cinema Player. Avica joins QuVis and Grass Valley as being able to demonstrate visible digital cinema playback technologies for use with DLP Cinema projectors.
TI have also announced agreements with BARCO, Christie and Digital Projection under the terms of which those companies will develop and market digital cinema projectors based on DLP Cinema technology. (CD)
