FILMMAKERS TO BE INTERVIEWED IN EDINBURGH

Two of USA's most influential documentary filmmakers, D A Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus, will be interviewed live on-stage by Nick Fraser of BBC's storyville on August 22 Filmhouse 1, Lothian Road, Edinburgh.
The interview will be illustrated with clips from some of their most famous films.
Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Norman Mailer and Bill Clinton have all been the subjects of Pennebaker's remarkable and unique filmmaking. Using lightweight, unobtrusive cameras, which inevitably lend intimacy and immediacy to his films, Pennebaker is credited as one of the pioneers of the 1950s Direct Cinema movement.
Most famously, he directed ‘Don't Look Back’ which followed Bob Dylan's 1966 tour of the UK and in 1969 he made his famous concert film ‘Monterey Pop’, confirming his talent for capturing the essence of performers like Joplin and Hendrix.
Pennebaker and Hegedus (now married to each other) collaborated on their first film together in 1977. Titled ‘Town Bloody Hall’, it featured a dramatic confrontation between Norman Mailer and Germaine Greer. Since then they have collaborated most successfully on a number of films, notably the 1992 Academy Award nominated ‘The War Room’ about Bill Clinton's presidential campaign.
Two of their recent films will feature in this year's Edinburgh International Film Festival – ‘Down From the Mountain’ - a concert film featuring the music from the Coen Brother's film ‘O Brother Where Art Thou?’ and ‘startup.com’ - a gripping tale of the rise and fall of an internet company co-directed by Hegedus and Jahane Noujaim and produced by Pennebaker.
