‘The Constant Gardener’ begins filming
Focus Features' ‘The Constant Gardener’, director Fernando Meirelles' first feature since his Academy Award nomination for directing ‘City of God’, begins principal photography this week.
Two-time Academy Award nominee Ralph Fiennes (Schindler's List, The English Patient) and Rachel Weisz (Runaway Jury, The Mummy) head the cast of the dramatic thriller, to which Focus holds worldwide rights.
The film's producer is Simon Channing Williams (De-Lovely, Academy Award nominee for Secrets & Lies). Tracey Seaward is co-producer, while Don Ranvaud, Gail Egan, Julia Blackman and Jeff Abberley are executive producers. Jeffrey Caine has adapted the screenplay from the best-selling John le Carré novel of the same name. The feature will film worldwide, in Berlin, London, and Nairobi (and other locations in Kenya) until the end of July.
The international supporting cast also includes Pernilla August (Star Wars Episode I and II), Danny Huston (Focus' 21 Grams), Archie Panjabi (Bend It Like Beckham), and Donald Sumpter (Enigma).
The filmmaking team includes director of photography César Charlone (Academy Award nominee for Mr. Meirelles' City of God), production designer Mark Tildesley (28 Days Later...), and costume designer Odile Dicks-Mireaux (Dirty Pretty Things).
Focus Features co-presidents David Linde and James Schamus said: "The Constant Gardener has occasioned a convening of tremendous talent from around the globe, and we are proud to be making and releasing this film worldwide. This story combines emotion, adventure, and social relevance, and we know that this creative team will make the screen version especially urgent and immediate in today's world."
