Netflix Acquires Global Distribution Rights For Hit BBC Thriller 'Bodyguard'
Netflix has acquired the rights to distribute hit BBC thriller 'Bodyguard' globally.
The streaming giant will premiere the six-part show to subscribers outside of the UK and Ireland and China from 24 October.
Featuring 'Game of Thrones' star Richard Madden and Keeley Hawes ('Line of Duty'), 'Bodyguard' tells the fictional story of David Budd (Madden), a heroic but volatile war veteran now working as a Specialist Protection Officer for the Royalty and Specialist Branch (RasP) of London's Metropolitan Police Service. He is then assigned to protect Home Secretary Julia Montague (Hawes) as terrorism threats grip the nation.
The show premiered to recording breaking figures on BBC One, obtaining the highest launch figure for any new drama in the UK in a decade. Future viewing figures have also cemented its place as the most watched new drama of 2018 in the UK.
Netflix has picked up the show via a deal with ITV Studios Global Entertainment.
Maria Kyriacou, President International, ITV Studios said: "Bodyguard has gripped the nation with its twists and turns. It's a perfect example of a show produced locally which has huge global appeal. Through our partnership with Netflix, we can't wait for audiences around the world to enjoy the show as much as audiences here in the UK."
'Bodyguard' is created and written by Jed Mercurio ('Line of Duty').
The series finale of 'Bodyguard' will air in the UK on BBC One this Sunday, 22 September, at 9pm.
