Bryant's Intelligent MDUs Win More Friends At IBC

News Image
For many years, mains distribution in equipment racks was a bit of an afterthought – simple, single supply units with 10 or 12 outlets were often installed and forgotten, but as technology advanced the size of equipment shrank, additional outlets were required and much more was demanded from the humble MDU.

Equipment with high inrush currents necessitated the development of sequential start up and redundant power via changeover units with up to 14 outlets became the norm. Further demands for monitoring and remote control over IP followed and with rising energy costs, environmental concerns have come to the forefront.

Bryant Unlimited have tracked these changes over several decades and have become world leaders in "intelligent" mains distribution, enabling users to monitor and control equipment remotely and to establish power budgets throughout their networks, sometimes across international borders.

Advanced circuitry within the units has reduced the production of waste heat with a consequential reduction in running costs. Sensors within racks can monitor temperature and humidity via the MDUs, warning engineers of impending failures. This year's IBC saw Bryant dedicate 50% of its floor space to their power distribution products, which have become the default standard for major broadcast and telecoms organisations worldwide. To cope with increased demand the company has recently taken on new staff, dedicated to MDU production, at its South London headquarters.

Graham Tottle, Bryant's General Manager, says: "New offerings for IBC were greeted with more interest this year than ever before with installers and end users alike realising the importance of correct power management and recognising the company's emphasis on exceptional build quality and reliability together with the accuracy of the real-time data available, displaying information previously only available on much more expensive specialist test and measurement equipment."
