Higher Bitrates At IBC

It goes without saying that attendance figures at IBC shows ever increasing numbers. Bearing in mind the number of exhibitors has increased with more halls and stands, as has the number of stand personnel, it's not surprising overall figures have gone up.

Over the years the visitor to exhibitor ratios have actually kept pace, the overall percentage varying little. Having said that, the increasingly higher bitrates envisaged in the future during IBC confirm IP is here to stay. Indeed, with increasing internet speeds available in the cloud, will hardware eventually become redundant, replaced by APs in the cloud?

Until that time there is no doubt that video production and transport over high capacity IP networks is being implemented in OBs, studios, operational television infrastructure and broadcast arenas. The emergence of 10G/s to 100Gb/s network technology, COTS switching planes, standardisation of formats JPEG 2000, ASPEN, SMPTE 2020 and 2100 ensure this new transport mechanism will not disappear like 3D did.
