New film and television archive launched online

The bfi and the New Opportunities Fund have announced the launch of a groundbreaking website, www.screenonline.org.uk.
This new site features an unrivalled collection of archive film and television footage from the bfi National Film and Television Archive, plus a range of essential biographies, stills and articles that provide context to this unique national resource. Screenonline will provide a guided tour through the story of British film and television, free of charge to every school, Further Education College and library in the United Kingdom.
Screenonline is the first time the bfi have given the public access online to their comprehensive collection of film and television material, giving teachers, students and film enthusiasts an exceptional opportunity to investigate British history, culture and society through cinema.
This unique resource can be applied to all areas of the curriculum from English to History and Media Studies. A text and stills based version of Screenonline will also be globally accessible.
The site encompasses a vast range of materials, from silent newsreel footage (1911-1930) through classic British comedy to contemporary television dramas.
