BBC Broadcast create new identity for 'Top of the Pops'

BBC Broadcast, one of the commercial arms of the BBC, have created the brand new identity for Top of the Pops, which will re-launch November 28 on BBC One.
It is the first time in three years that the titles for the BBC’s flagship music programme have had a full makeover, which will coincide with the launch of the exciting new show. Top of The Pops is not only the longest-running music show in the world but also a huge global brand. The programme encompasses all forms of popular music from Elton John to the Cheeky Girls and Coldplay to Beyonce Knowles. The key branding element for the show, created by BBC Broadcast Design team, is the logo, which incorporates a sound wave icon that can reflect any form of music. The identity can be applied to merchandising and branding across different platforms.
It is a universal device that ties in with any kind of music and has a retro yet funky feel that fits Top of the Pops.
Postproduction was done by Evolutions using a matrix of a background cityscape that moves in time with the music.
Jane Walker, Senior Creative Director, BBC Broadcast, said: “These titles take viewers on what is the biggest musical event of the week. Top of the Pops is part of the UK’s broadcasting heritage, and the refresh taking into account the changing audience is reflected in the new identity BBC Broadcast has created.”
Andi Peters, Executive Editor Popular Music and Executive Producer, Top of the Pops, added: “The titles look fantastic, we’re really pleased with them as they encompass the feel of the all new show completely. They’re the perfect introduction to Top of the Pops.”
