The Worst Witch Reinvented For CBBC

News Image
CBBC has commissioned a new re-imagining of The Worst Witch.

The series, which is based on a series of books by Jill Murphy, follows the story of Mildred. She doesn't come from a family of witches, but one day a witch named Maud Spellbody arrives on her apartment balcony on her way to selection day at Miss Cackle's Academy For Witches.

Maud manages to persuade Mildred to go along, but while she tries her best, her lack of magical knowledge means she is always getting things wrong. Mildred is bright, funny, kind and resourceful and often forces herself to face her fears, so even if she is 'The Worst Witch', she has the courage of a true heroine.

Along the way, she makes friends with Maud and Enid. The new series will follow their friendship as they navigate the trials and tribulations of a new school, the intrigue, the drama and the rivalries which come courtesy of Mildred's enemy, Ethel Hallow.

Commissioned by CBBC Controller Cheryl Taylor, The Worst Witch is made by CBBC Productions, the in-house creative team based in Salford, and is co-produced with ZDF and distributed by ZDFE.

The CBBC Productions executive producer is Marcus Wilson, with Lucy Martin as producer. Emma Reeves is lead writer on the adaptation.

The Worst Witch will be on CBBC on Wednesdays at 4.30pm, from 11 January 2017.
