Concorde captured with BBC WiScape’s WiCam-C

BBC Wales were first to broadcast live to air coverage of one of Concorde’s last flights with BBC WiScape’s revolutionary news gathering wireless digital radio camera, the WiCam-C.
Launched at IBC in September 2003, the new camera system enabled the crew to get close to the action quickly and transmit high quality digital pictures directly to the Wales Today studio. Only the WiCam-C, wire free camera was permitted access to this historical event, as the presence of aircraft on the runway at Cardiff airport meant that satellite news gathering trucks were unable to enter the perimeter of the airport. The use of the WiCam-C enabled Wales Today to overcome these safety concerns, ensuring that it could be first with footage.
The WiCam-C can be dispatched and deployed at speed – thereby allowing cameramen incomparable flexibility and the ability to capture footage which has previously been impossible to gather.
Trevor Poynter, Communications supervisor for BBC Wales, said: "The WiCam-C enabled us to capture historical coverage with no picture break-up and allowed us considerable freedom of movement. With the removal of time-consuming cable choreography, we were able to broadcast pictures quickly, easily and cost effectively."
