Omnitek Ultra XR To Debut At NAB 2016
Waveform monitors have always been one of the essential tools for anyone working in the video industry and used for everything from level alignment, grading through to quality control, writes Alan Wheable FISTC, MITOL Senior Technical Author at Omnitek.
The importance of waveform monitors in UHD / 4K content creation and distribution is increasing everyday as the need to ensure that conversions between link types (e.g. QL 3G-SDI, 6G-SDI, 12G-SDI, HDMI and IP), encoding methods (such as Square Division and 2 Sample Interleave) and colour space conversions (between BT.709 and BT.2020) produce the correct result.
It is currently a challenge to integrate and operate new technology when right tools and support for the physical link types, that you use now, are unavailable.
Following on from its success in 12G-SDI product design and 4K system infrastructure testing with the Ultra 4K Tool Box, the new Omnitek Ultra XR now provides a sophisticated solution for 4K/UHD content creation, post production and program QC.
The new high resolution waveform monitor available as standard on the Omnitek Ultra XR and as an option on the Ultra 4K Tool Box supports video formats from SD up to UHD / 4K at frame rates up to 60Hz and supports both the current BT.709 colour space and the BT.2020 colour space which extends the viewable palette of colours (for UHD / 4K formats above 60Hz).
Due to be debuted at NAB 2016, the Omnitek Ultra XR is configured specifically for content creators, colourists, post-production editors and other processors of DI, working with ultra high resolution UHD images delivered over QL 3G, DL 6G or 12G SDI and HDMI links.
All of the traditional tools expected in these operating areas are provided, but engineered specifically with 4K/UHD in mind. Support is also offered for 12-bit 4:4:4 SDI input formats in YCbCr, RGB, and XYZ, Wide Colour Gamut RGB - ITU-R BT.2020 and High Dynamic Range (HDR) inputs - ST2084 / PQ and Hybrid Log Gamma. Picture display, true 4K waveform monitor, vectorscope, BT.709 / BT.2020 CIE gamut charts, data / cable views, video timing, audio meters and video/audio/ANC status displays will be provided as standard for SD to 4K resolutions.
The Ultra XR supports SD, HD, 3G and 6G-SDI as standard, with 12G-SDI as an option. The ability of the Ultra XR to monitor different physical links as well Square Division and 2 Sample Interleaved sources ensures that the signal can be viewed and checked regardless of how it actually arrives. This flexibility makes the Ultra XR an ideal fit for existing and new installations as the technological landscape continuously evolves.
Omnitek's technology demonstration at this year's NAB will include a video over IP implementation based on SMPTE 2022-6 as part of its on-going agnostic support for new technologies being adopted by the broadcast industry. In this demonstration the Ultra platform will be used to analyse SMPTE 2022-6 source test patterns, test sequences and audio tones via a SFP Tx/Rx fibre module. Omnitek's desire is to provide an appropriate technical solution regardless of which consortium's implementation is adopted. Omnitek will be exhibiting at NAB this year in Central Hall, Booth C10418.
