BBC1 Series To Uncover Britain's Spending Habits
Anne Robinson is to explore Britain's spending habits in a two-part documentary series for BBC One.
Britain's Secret Spending Habits (working title) was announced by Charlotte Moore, Controller of BBC One, in 2014. The series looks at how our currency unites us as nation yet divides us into social classes, spending tribes and individual consumers.
Over the two episodes, Anne will journey around Britain, meeting people across the spending spectrum and observing first-hand how we spend our money. Episode one features two families who reveal their personal finances and shopping budgets in order to make ends meet – from juggling young children to feed, school and entertain, as well as holidays, after-school clubs, and wanting the latest high tech gadgets. Anne also meets a Baroness with inherited wealth, a self-made businessman owning a multi-million-pound trailer park, much like the mobile home he grew up in, and a 'freegan' living in a homemade house in the woods.
In episode two, Anne asks whether money truly makes us happy and meets people from differing economic backgrounds around the country.
Anne Robinson said of her own love of spending: "My attitude to money is embarrassingly, bottom-clenchingly un-British. Most women would rather have a bikini wax in public than be honest about their spending and most men would rather show off their bald patch than admit what they earn. We reveal just how secretive we are about our own spending, but fantastically unforgiving and judgemental about other people's."
Britain's Secret Spending Habits was commissioned by Alison Kirkham, BBC Head of Commissioning, Factual Formats & Features and Events.
The series is Executive Produced by Jenny Byrom from The Garden Productions and Producer/Director Helen Richards.
The series will air summer 2015.
