Todd-AO Creative Services complete post for ‘Canterbury Tales’
Todd-AO Creative Services have recently completed the postproduction on ‘Canterbury Tales’, commissioned by BBC Drama for BBC terrestrial transmission in September.
Directed by Julian Jarrold, John McKay, Marc Munden and Andy De Emmony, ‘Canterbury Tales’ are one of the BBC’s most anticipated televisual events of the Autumn.
Kevin Horsewood, Senior Colourist who graded Canterbury Tales, said: “Regarding the look of Canterbury Tales, the production team wanted to make each episode as different as possible.
“For example, ‘The Knights Tale’, which is mainly set in a prison, was shot on quite grainy film stock. We added a desaturated blue, green look to give the whole programme a very hard, rough, gritty feel.
“‘The Man of Law Tale’ was shot in the UK and South Africa and had a very different look. With the South African material - which was shot on Super 16mm and Super 8mm - we made a bright warm wash with the primary colours toned down, for example no bright greens, blues, reds just a general yellowy feel. With great weather out in South Africa it wasn't hard to achieve such a powerful look.
Horsewood concluded: “What I have found from working on Canterbury Tales and from previous experience of working with such experienced DOP’s and Directors, is that they let you experiment and push the range of colours as much as you want. This allows you to be unlimited in your creativity and therefore achieve the best possible results.”
Chris Gill, editor on ‘The Man of Law Tale’, agrees with Horsewood. “I have worked with the Director Julian Jarrold many times and he always gives me free range to experiment. As a result, we more often than not, end up with a dynamic piece of work that we are both very happy with.”
