Skillset announces new chairperson

News Image
Clive Jones, Chief Executive of Carlton Channels, has taken over as Chair of Skillset, the Sector Skills Council (SSC) for the audio-visual industries.
Mr Jones replaces Bob Nelson, Controller of BBC Development & Training, who has held the position for the past two years and been a Skillset board member since their inception in 1993. In recognition of his outstanding contribution to training in the industry, Mr Nelson was presented with a coveted Skillset Lifetime Achievement Award.
An LSE graduate, Clive Jones began working in broadcasting when he moved from a successful career in newspapers to Yorkshire Television in 1978. Latterly, in his role as CEO at Carlton Channels he headed up Carlton’s four ITV regions and related businesses, including Carlton Cinema, the company’s facilities businesses and their interests in London News Network, GMTV and ITN. Carlton Sales, recently enlarged by the acquisition of HTV and the SMG sales contract, also report to Jones.
In addition to his responsibilities as Chief Executive Officer, he is Chairman of London News Network, Chairman of Carlton Sales, Chairman of Carlton 021, a director of BARB, GMTV and Skillset and sits on the ITV Council. He is a governor of the National Film and Television School, the Chair of the Cultural Diversity Network, Chair of International Film Festival of Wales, Chair of the Development Board of International Film School of Wales and is an active member of the Commission on Racial Equality’s Leadership Challenge. In November 1995, he received an RTS Fellowship.
The announcement and presentation was made following Skillset’s launch as the first-ever Sector Skills Council. Sector Skills Councils are UK-wide strategic bodies, licensed by the government to address skills needs and help improve productivity within their industry sectors.
Mr Jones said: “It is a privilege to take over as Skillset’s Chair – especially at such an exciting time for the organisation. I’m looking forward to working with Dinah Caine and her team to identify and address the skills issues faced by our industry.”
