Tern TV Secures 22 Hours From BBC Nations

News Image
Tern TV has secured over 22 hours of commissions from BBC Nations.

David Strachan, managing director at Tern TV, said: "We are pleased to have won a variety of commissions across several genres in our two home nations. Combined with the commissions we have from BBC Network, ITV, Channel 4, Discovery and Sky, this has given us a strong 2014 and we look forward to building in 2015, both in the UK and international markets."

BBC Scotland has recommissioned The Beechgrove Garden for 2015 and has ordered a one-off special Christmas Celebration. It is also set to air observational documentary The Mountain, a six-part series that depicts one season at a British ski resort in Cairngorms National Park. BBC Northern Ireland has picked up the four-part series Irish Colleges in Europe (w/t) and one-off special Wonder Women. In addition, the broadcaster is currently airing eight-part monthly cultural series The Gaitherin.

Brendan Hughes, Head of Tern Belfast and executive producer said: "It's been a busy year in Belfast with a healthy mix of 6.5 hours local NI programming, and 5.5 for various networks. Finally getting something away from nations to network has been great."

Productions for BBC Scotland:
The Beechgrove Garden is a topical weekly gardening show presented by Jim McColl, Carole Baxter, Chris Beardshaw and George Anderson. The show originally launched in 1978 and airs on BBC Scotland, and on BBC TWO network on Sunday mornings. The series was commissioned by Ewan Angus. It is produced and directed by Gwyneth Hardy for Tern TV.

Presented by Sally Magnusson, Christmas Celebration (1x45') will see 350 members of the National Youth Choirs of Scotland singing carols across midnight into Christmas Day. It will also look back to the Commonwealth Games which were held in Glasgow in the summer. The special was commissioned by Ewan Angus for BBC Scotland. It is directed by Bridget Caldwell and produced by David Strachan for Tern TV.

The Mountain (6x30') charts the 2013/2014 winter season at Aviemore and offers insight into the lives of the 120 men and women who keep the ski resort open through gales and snowstorms. The series is executive produced for BBC Scotland by David Harron. It is directed by Steven Todd, Jenny Stock and Katrina Inkster, produced by Colin Cameron and Steven Todd and executive produced by Harry Bell for Tern TV.

Productions for BBC Northern Ireland:
In 17th century Europe Ireland established a number of colleges as part of a movement to secure Irish culture, language, heritage and religion in a post Reformation world. Irish Colleges in Europe (4x30') will offer a history of four of these colleges – Leuven in Belgium, The Irish College in Paris, The Irish College in Rome and Salamanca in Spain. The programme was commissioned by Susan Lovell and Karen Kirby for BBC Northern Ireland. It is directed by Keith O'Grady and executive produced by Brendan Hughes for Tern TV. It was jointly funded by BBC Northern Ireland and Northern Ireland Screen's Irish Language Broadcast Fund.

Wonder Women (1x30’) takes us into the worlds of six women who work in non-traditional female jobs. From Jean Morgan, a skipper on a 60 foot fishing trawler and Janet McGrath, a train driver, to Martina Billeux a roofer and tiler who followed in her father’s footsteps. Wonder Women was commissioned by Susan Lovell for BBC Northern Ireland. It is directed by Laura Doherty and executive produced by Brendan Hughes for Tern TV.

In The Gaitherin (8x30'), Helen Mark takes to the road in a celebration of the culture, history and lives of the Ulster-Scots. Along the way she visits towns and villages including: Antrim, Belfast, Coleraine, Glenarm Castle, Groomsport, and Portballintrae. The series was commissioned by Susan Lovell for BBC Northern Ireland. It is directed by John FD Northover, produced by John Daly and executive produced by Brendan Hughes for Tern TV. It was jointly funded by BBC Northern Ireland and Northern Ireland Screen's Ulster-Scots Broadcast Fund.
