A summer of sport for Megahertz Unit 11

Unit 11, the new BBC Outside Broadcast vehicle custom-built by Megahertz Broadcast Systems, has a very hectic summer ahead after being booked for a wide range of high profile live sporting events across Europe.
The vehicle, which was commissioned in 2002 following the success of its predecessor (Unit 10) at similar sport meetings, will provide expert linking and studio facilities to sporting events ranging from the 9th IAAF World Championship Athletics in Paris in August, to the Euro 2004 qualifying match between Macedonia and England in September.
The new vehicle follows a similar design to that of Unit 10, which made its debut at the Commonwealth Games in 2002, incorporating a Calrec 40-channel S2 sound desk, a Thomson DD-35 vision mixer and a vision system, with facilities for up to 20 cameras. However the new unit also boasts two Quartz 128x128 SDI matrices, and improved VT audio monitoring facilities for eight 6-channel EVS LSMs.
Unit 11 is based around a large, double expanding trailer custom coachbuilt by A Smith’s of Great Bentley.
Cambridge based Megahertz Broadcast Systems was responsible for the management, wiring, and installation of Unit 11, utilising some equipment from an existing BBC OB truck.
