Fears as government proposes UHF TV spectrum change
Raycom have reacted quickly to quosh fears that the Department of Trade and Industry are preparing to auction off the UHF TV spectrum.
The department's plans have been criticised by industry insiders as they may adversely effect the livelihoods of thousands of freelance journalists requiring new equipment. Retailers could also feel the pinch as uncertainty products compatibility impacts on sales.
The proposals were outlined in the consultation document entitled 'Digital Television: The Principles for Spectrum Planning' which was published at the end of last year.
In a lengthy statement, the Raycom said: "The plans, if enacted, would make life extremely difficult and expensive for anyone using radio talkback and UHF radio microphones in the UK."
The company, however, believes that the outcry from industry organisations, broadcasters and freelancers could be sufficient to extend the consultation period, but the company said that consequences are already having a severe impact on the companies producing and selling radio equipment.
"Many of the leading brands are UK manufacturers have all reported a dramatic slump in sales which threatens their future survival. It is highly likely that some existing frequencies used by the PMSE (Programme Making and Special Events) sector will be lost and although some may be gained, the net result is that much of the equipment in use will have to be modified. This uncertainty plus the threat of huge price hikes for licences, has decimated sales of associated radio equipment," the company said.
Raycom have long lobbied on the issue and has pledged to work with suppliers on a strategy for the future to restore confidence and to 'future-proof' any investments made at the present time.
Raycom's Managing Director, Ray Withers, said: "We felt it essential to grasp the nettle now and work with our suppliers to restore confidence as quickly as possible. This may not take effect for a few years but we are seeing the damage to the whole industry right now."
The Institute of Broadcast Sound (IBS), which has over 800 members, have also campaigned to resist the government's plans said: "About 200 of our members are freelance sound recordists who own substantial quantities of radio microphone equipment. These members are very concerned that the government's proposals will make their jobs impossible and their equipment valueless."
Raycom have an upgrade programme for Lectrosonics wireless equipment offering a trade-in allowance of up to 40 per cent of the original purchase price of a working system towards the purchase of the latest model to meet changes in frequency allocations. These programmes are valid for three years beginning in April 2002.
Some frequency modifications, however, cannot be performed on all makes of wireless microphone systems, especially older models, due to the availability of RF filters and the varying architecture of design. The three-year upgrades offer is subject to terms and conditions.
