SignaSys publish multi-channel broadcast report

US systems integration specialists SignaSys have released a study published by their Chief Technology Officer Mark Brown.
The report addresses cohesive and efficient multi-channel ATSC broadcast environments that decrease risk of deployment and operational workflow impact as well as implementation issues. It also outlines an approach by which application level communications and device level orientation achieve required operational and technical goals.
Mr Brown said: "As many stations are implementing ATSC/DTV multi-channel broadcast environments, it is important to consider the fundamental impact these environments will have on station operations, workflow, and structure."
To minimise operational impacts, collaborative application environments must be addressed. Dynamic program day-parting and last minute changes can become procedurally taxing in a multi-channel environment and therefore cohesive communication between traffic, automation, encoder/multiplexer control systems, and dynamic PSIP are critical. Since currently no standardised control protocol exists to allow for these enhanced communications, this paper addresses specialized approaches to achieve application interaction allowing for automated program day-parting and single point of entry supporting "last minute changes"-all resulting in efficient multi-channel operations.
In addition to required changes in station applications, this presentation touches on proper device level implementation incorporating acquisition, ingest, storage, routing, ATSC encoding/multiplexing, as well as EAS and Closed Captioning issues. Specific consideration is given to migrating master control environments, which, due to the inherent requirements and stresses of multi-channel broadcasting, necessitate unique operational mind-set and supporting tools.
Finally, this paper introduces the Multi-Channel Broadcast Alliance (MBA). The MBA is made up of a diverse, open federation of vendors whose primary goal is to provide efficient collaborative system solutions that address the specific needs of multi-channel broadcasters. SignaSys acts as the MBA certifying agent. The group's current focus is predicated on providing for effective ATSC digital multi-channel broadcast systems.
