CCG funded film features Gaeltacht's Industrial Revolution

News Image
Funded by Comataidh Craolaidh Gaidhlig (CCG) and produced by Caledonia, Sterne & Wyld, 'Bha Uair Eil' Ann' is a highly visual and revelatory exploration of highland history that turns the 'crofting & fishing' cliché on its head.
The film will show how the Highlands and Islands were the scene of a dynamic industrial tradition which played an important role in building Britain's industrial might and making it the workshop of the world.
Presenter Angela MacEachan re-discovers the Gael not as fisherman or crofter, but as the builder of roads, bridges and railways; the digger of canals and quarries; the miners of gold, lead and silver; and as craftsmen in iron and precious metals. As the towns and factories of the Lowlands expanded during the industrial revolution, the slate industry of the Highlands (pictured) boomed.
The film uses NASA research to reveal the source of the wealth and power of the medieval Lordship of the Isles, and tells how a village in Argyll had a major impact on the battle of Waterloo, and gave its name to one of the great dangers of the Cold War.
At the dawn of the information age, and the politics of devolution and inclusion, the forgotten industrial revolution of the Gael shows what can be achieved on so-called 'remote areas' of Scotland.
'Bha Uair Eil' Ann' will be shown on BBC2 Scotland on Thursday, May 2 at 6.30pm. The film was produced and directed by Les Wilson of Caledonia, Sterne & Wyld and funded by CCG.
