PROVYS' Martin Junek writes on this year's FIAT IFTA World Conference...

Following on from the recent successful IBC in Amsterdam, the real archivists are gathering again by somewhat warmer waters in Dubai Marina for the FIAT IFTA World Conference 2013 at the end of October.
The conference programme, over three days comprises sessions on Preservation & Digitisation, Media Management, and Access & Use. Today's coexistence of shelving next to servers ask for a combination of old school skills with new competencies.
This combination is the main theme of the Digitisation & Preservation track, which tackles mass digitisation requiring totally new manners in quality control and digital preservation.
The Media Management track specialises in production of metadata, covering linked metadata, as well as automatically generated metadata, user generated metadata and preservation metadata. The track examines current and future trends in digital audiovisual archiving from technology, process, and workflow perspective. The Access & Use track concentrates on new services based on archived content emerging in the digital age and transforming workflows of AV broadcast archives. The track explores how this formerly unaffordable "lightness of access" affects the reuse of content and shapes the future of archives igniting new business models and radically new partnerships.
Renowned guest speakers include Mr. Sam Barnett, CEO MBC, Mr. Hassan Ghoul, Managing Director Grass Valley Middle East, Mr. Nobuhisa Yamashita, Senior Program Director Archives Division NHK, and delegates are on the edge of their seats in expectation.
Each day's programme is divided into three sections, with a keynote speech immediately after lunch. The keynote speakers are Mr. Abdulrahman Alhazaa, President of the Saudi Broadcasting Corporation, Mr. Michael Edson of The Smithsonian Institution, and Mr. Peter B. Kaufman, Founder & President of Intelligent Television.
One of the eagerly expected presenters is Mr. Josef Vasica (pictured), Chief Executive of Provys, who will be stressing the importance of the inseparable relationship between essence and metadata in the file-based environment.
Josef's comprehensive team are experts in managing not only digital archive workflows and digital media repositories, but generally in all information about archived content including the indivisible accompanying rights.
The captain of the flagship for this convention is Ms. Dorothy Donnan and everyone knows that she can steer us professionally through the calm waters of the conference. Rest assured that everything in Dubai Marina is shipshape and ready to welcome delegates on board. Don't miss this conference, set your course for Dubai where FIAT IFTA is waiting to welcome you.
