Trio of video clampers launched by Kramer
At the Production Show, Kramer Electronics introduced three new video signal clampers, the three channel VM-37 (pictured), the three channel VM-67 and the 12 channel VM-127.
They restore the DC levels of video and RGB signals by removing the input signals’ DC offsets and re-clamping them to a specified DC level. The default clamping level is the sync tip level, assuming the signals are composite or ‘Y’ video signals, but the user can easily adjust this.
“The main reason why black level clamping is needed, is for removing the DC offset on which a video signal may ride,” says David Jayes VP Engineering Kramer Electronics. “Many pieces of equipment manufactured today output the video (whether it is RGB, component, YC or composite) riding on a fixed DC voltage. This is especially common with satellite decoders, as well as video and graphic cards in PCs. Removing the DC offset is often the difference between a working or a dead system. In other, less severe cases, you may see the video signal with a colour offset, wrong colours, blooming, or very bright.
“These video sources are at fault! It is not permitted for the video signal to have this offset, but the fact of the matter is that more and more equipment with this problem is being made. So we've created a family of machines to deal with the problem, rather than simply telling the customer that his equipment is faulty.”
The VM-37 is a 3 Channel Video Clamper in a compact Kramer TOOLS enclosure. The Kramer VM-67 is a 6 Channel Video Clamper in a desktop enclosure. The VM-127 is a 12 Channel Video Clamper in a 19” rack mount enclosure.
The list prices in the UK for these models are £129 + VAT for the VM-37, £219 + VAT for the VM-67 and £299 + VAT for the VM-127.
